If you are reading this ad, you probably already know the advantages of Dart's LS Next aluminum blocks. While it is an awesome piece right out of the box, machining is required and there is still room for design improvement. The modifications we make become essential for survivability once you start putting on power adders or roll onto a road race track.
Problem #1 - Head Lift
Power adders of any type dramatically increase cylinder pressure which in turn will cause the head bolts to stretch and the heads to lift. Even the slightest bit of head lift can damage the head gaskets. Serious head lift will crack the head resulting in catastrophic failure.
Solution 1a: Custom Sleeves
The standard sleeves installed by Dart are all full Siamese. That means that the outboard sides of cylinder sleeves 1, 2, 7 and 8 all have small crescent shaped gaps between the block and the sleeve. Any gaps leaves the head gasket unsupported and becomes a potential failure point. Our custom-sleeved versions have no such gap. They are full round on the outboard side thereby eliminating this potential point of head gasket failure.
Solution 1b: 1/2" Head Bolts
While these blocks boast a six bolt/cylinder design, that only takes you so far in clamping force; say about 50% more than a four bolt design. A 1/2" bolt provides 50% more clamping force than the standard 7/16" head bolt. That double bump will keep you of trouble and its no big deal reaming your existing heads to accept the larger head bolts.
Problem #2 - Heat
Big power comes from effectively burning lots of fuel. That means creating lots of heat. Unchecked, that heat will destroy any engine. Pistons are directly exposed to the source of the heat but are only cooled indirectly without piston oilers. Given enough power and exposure time, the pistons will eventually fail. Piston oilers apply direct cooling to mitigate this problem.
Our 4 axis CNC mill will correct the head bolt sizing and deck the block to height. Our old-school Sunnen hones use stones to get the finish that we believe to be ideal for seating rings in high performance engines. The piston oilers are installed using our special fixturing. Cam bearings and freeze plug installation followed by a finish wash and it's ready to go.
